topic 11.
Behavior in special situations.

In an emergency it will show whether you can really drive. Topic 11 trains your behavior in exceptional situations - accidents, breakdowns, emergency vehicles, tunnels, slippery roads, fog, aquaplaning. Anyone who stays calm and acts correctly protects themselves and others.

What you learn.

Learning objectives for topic 11

  • The correct order after an accident (safety - help - emergency call - evidence)
  • How to form an emergency lane (middle between left and remaining lanes)
  • How to recognize and clear emergency vehicles with flashing lights AND sirens
  • How to behave in aquaplaning, black ice, snow and fog
  • What you have to pay attention to in the tunnel (light, distance, emergency)
  • How to properly manage a breakdown on the motorway (hard shoulder, warning triangle)
  • What contents a prescribed breakdown kit has (high-visibility vest, first-aid kit, warning triangle)

The most important rules.

Core rules from topic 11

Rule 1

Order after the accident: ASB

Secure (hazard lights, warning vest, warning triangle 100 m outside of town / 50 m inside of town behind the scene of the accident), provide immediate aid (first aid, call 112), secure evidence (photos, witnesses, personal details, police).

Rule 2

Emergency lane - middle = gap

In traffic jams on motorways and multi-lane roads outside of town: the left lane moves to the left, all other lanes to the right. This creates an alley for emergency vehicles in the middle. Violation: €200-320 + 2 points + 1 month driving ban.

Rule 3

Emergency vehicle = make space immediately

If there are blue lights AND sirens (right of way according to § 38 StVO), you must immediately and immediately make space - even over red lights, in no-parking areas, on sidewalks, as long as no one is endangered.

Rule 4

Tunnel: Lights on, large distance, remember emergency call box

Always have the lights on in the tunnel (even during the day), increase the safety distance (tunnel rule of thumb: 50 m), radio on traffic information, emergency call boxes every 150 m on the tunnel wall. In the event of a fire: turn off the engine, leave the key in the vehicle and walk to the nearest emergency exit.

Rule 5

Aquaplaning reaction: Clutch - No steering - No braking

If the car floats: depress the clutch, keep the steering wheel straight, DO NOT brake, let the speed drop. If it is slippery: brake carefully (or let the ABS work), no sudden steering movements.

Common mistakes.

What goes wrong in the theory test

Error 1

Form emergency lane too late

The alley must be formed IMMEDIATELY when there is a traffic jam - not just when the emergency vehicle is visible. Otherwise it won't get through. High fines + points.

Error 2

Place warning triangle too close

In urban areas: 50 m. Out of urban areas: 100 m. On motorways: 200 m. Anyone who sets up the triangle 20 m behind the car has not fulfilled it in an emergency.

Error 3

Braking too quickly when it is slippery

Pumping braking (without ABS) or hard pedaling (with ABS) increases the braking distance. Let the ABS work and steer gently at the same time.

Error 4

Do not turn on any lights in the tunnel

Even when the tunnel is illuminated: low beam headlights on. Otherwise fine; complicity in an accident.

Sample questions.

In theory test style

Question 1

What do you do when a traffic jam forms on the highway?

AnswerImmediately form an emergency lane - left lane to the left, everyone else to the right.

Violation: €200-320 + 2 points + 1 month driving ban. Mandatory from the first sign of a traffic jam.

Question 2

How do you react to aquaplaning?

AnswerDepress the clutch, keep the steering wheel straight, do not brake, let it coast.

Steering movements or braking increase slipping.

Question 3

At what distance do you have to set up the warning triangle on the motorway?

AnswerAbout 200 meters behind the broken down vehicle.

Inner town 50 m, out of town (country road) 100 m, motorway 200 m.

Connection to practice.

This is how the theme shows up 11 in your driving lesson

During each practice session, your driving instructor simulates emergency situations - sudden braking, the vehicle in front changing lanes, an emergency vehicle coming from behind. In Düsseldorf there are tunnels (e.g. Rheinufertunnel) and expressways where you learn correct behavior under real conditions. First aid content from the compulsory course is transferred to traffic here.

FAQ.

Frequently asked questions on the topic 11

  • Stop, use hazard lights, put on a safety vest, set up a warning triangle, help the injured, call 112 (or 110 if there is purely property damage), exchange personal details, secure evidence (photos, sketches, witnesses).
