topic 12.
Security through continued learning.

The driver's license is not the end, but the beginning. Topic 12 shows why safe driving is a lifelong learning process - from the probationary period to refresher drives and age-related checks. Those who continue their training drive safer and longer.

What you learn.

Learning objectives for topic 12

  • Why safe driving needs to be trained over decades
  • What defensive driving means (looking ahead, buffer zone, horizon of expectations)
  • When a refresher drive makes sense (long break, new car, uncertainty)
  • Which advanced seminars are available (ASF during the probationary period, FES for points, MPU)
  • Which new driving techniques should be checked regularly
  • How driving ability changes with age (vision, reaction, medication)
  • What role driving safety training (e.g. ADAC training) plays

The most important rules.

Core rules from topic 12

Rule 1

Defensive driving = looking ahead

Driving defensively means recognizing what could happen next. Anticipate the next lane changer, the opening door on the parked car, the child behind the ball. Create a buffer zone - spatially and temporally.

Rule 2

Refresher trip after a long break

If you haven't driven for 5+ years, you should take refresher lessons. Even after an accident, illness or switching to a significantly different car (e.g. combustion engine → electric), it's worth refreshing - not mandatory, but often a lifesaver.

Rule 3

Advanced seminar for novice drivers (ASF)

Obligation after an A violation during the probationary period. 4 sessions of 135 minutes each + 1 hour of driving in traffic. Costs around €350-550. Refusal = withdrawal of driving license.

Rule 4

Driving fitness seminar (FES) to reduce points

If you have 1-5 points, 1 point can be reduced voluntarily - once every 5 years. FES lasts 2 days, costs around €400 and consists of traffic education and psychological parts.

Rule 5

Age-related suitability

Visual performance, reaction speed and medication intake change. Regular eye doctor from 60+. Voluntary medical checks recommended for those aged 70+. Everyone is obliged to remain fit to drive.

Common mistakes.

What goes wrong in the theory test

Error 1

I believe everything is learned with the rag

The practical test is the minimum standard. Truly safe driving only develops over 5-10 years of experience - and even then through constant self-reflection.

Error 2

See ASF as 'punishment'

The advanced seminar is about helping you help yourself - reflecting on your own driving mistakes. Those who take it seriously have a better chance of getting through the probationary period unscathed.

Error 3

Postpone points reduction

A FES makes sense BEFORE the 6-point threshold is reached. After that there is no more dismantling. Anyone who waits risks having their driver's license revoked.

Error 4

Consider your own routine to be 'safe'

Routine can lead to overconfidence. Anyone who drives the same route for ten years often overlooks changes — new signs, changed right-of-way, new bike paths.

Sample questions.

In theory test style

Question 1

You haven't driven a car in 5 years. What do you recommend to yourself?

AnswerRefresher lessons at a driving school - not compulsory, but useful from a safety perspective.

Routine is lost, new traffic rules and technology are added (e.g. assistance systems).

Question 2

What does defensive driving mean?

AnswerDrive with foresight, plan for other people's mistakes, maintain a buffer zone - spatially and temporally.

The rule of thumb is: 'Expect other people's stupidity, but don't trust it.'

Question 3

When do you have to attend an advanced seminar?

AnswerAfter an A violation during the two-year probationary period.

It can also become mandatory after several B violations. Refusal = withdrawal of driving license.
