The basics

What is a refresher lesson?

It’s an ordinary driving lesson for someone who already has a licence. You drive, and your instructor sits next to you and tells you how it’s going. Because you’re not in training for a test, there’s no syllabus we have to get through, so we spend the time on whatever you need.

Nothing is reported to any authority, there’s no test at the end and there’s no minimum number of lessons. You book one, and afterwards you decide whether you’d like another. Some people come after a long break from driving. Others have one particular thing holding them back, such as the motorway, reversing into a parking space, roundabouts or driving in the dark.

What you need

What you need to bring

Hardly anything. A valid licence and a booked lesson are all it takes. There’s no test, so you don’t need an eye test, a first-aid course or any theory lessons.

Your licence: A valid class B licence or higher. Please bring the original to your first lesson, because you’re only allowed to drive the car if your licence is valid.
No eye test or first aid: You only need these when you’re being granted a new licence, and that isn’t happening here.
No theory lessons: You don’t have to come to any classes. If you’d like to brush up on the rules, you can use our learning app.
Something to aim for: Tell us beforehand what you’d like to practise, even if it’s something small. The clearer you are, the more you’ll get out of the first lesson. ‘I don’t feel confident on the A46’ is a very good place to start.
An expired licence: If your licence document has run out, or you still have the old paper licence, we’ll quickly sort out what that means before we drive. Your right to drive doesn’t expire, but the document itself does.
A licence from abroad: A licence from outside the EU is only valid here for a limited time. You can read what happens after that on our page about licence conversion.

Step by step

How it works

There are three steps, and the first one matters most, because what you want to practise decides where we drive.

Tell us what you need
Give us a call, send us a WhatsApp message or fill in the pre-registration form. You don’t need to explain more than you want to. One sentence is enough, for example how long you’ve been off the road or what’s worrying you.
Step 02
Your first lesson
We start gently, usually in Oberbilk and the streets nearby. Your instructor watches how you drive, and afterwards gives you an honest picture of what’s already going well and what we’ll work on.
Step 03
Carry on as you like
After that first lesson you’ll know where you stand, and it’s up to you whether you carry on and how. We’ll suggest what might help, but we don’t book anything in advance and we don’t sell you a package.

What can we practise?

Anything you’d meet in everyday driving. It works best if you pick one or two things to focus on, rather than trying to do everything at once.

A lot of it is about driving in town: junctions without traffic lights, changing lanes, roundabouts and narrow streets with cars parked on both sides. Parking is another big one, especially reversing into a space, and so is the motorway, where you have to join the traffic and merge. You can practise all of these, and they all get easier the more often you do them. Talking about them only gets you so far.

We drive in real traffic rather than on an empty car park, but we choose the setting to suit you. If you don’t feel ready for the motorway yet, we start on country roads. If parking makes you nervous, we practise somewhere with nobody waiting behind you. You set the pace, and nobody is writing anything down.

Things people often practise

Town driving: junctions, changing lanes, roundabouts and narrow streets with oncoming traffic
Parking: reversing into a space, parallel parking at the kerb, multi-storey car parks and manoeuvring
Motorway: joining, merging, keeping your distance and changing lanes at higher speeds
Darkness and rain: driving when visibility is poor, dealing with glare, and allowing for longer stopping distances

Good to know

Length: a driving lesson lasts 45 minutes. For a refresher, two lessons back to back usually work better.
Car: our school car.
Automatic: that’s fine, just mention it when you get in touch.
Afterwards: you get an honest opinion from your instructor, with no report and no mark.

If you feel nervous

When driving makes you anxious

Feeling anxious about driving is more common than you might think, and you don’t owe anyone an explanation for it.

Driving anxiety rarely comes out of nowhere. It can start after an accident, a near miss, a long break or a move from a small town to the busy roads of Düsseldorf. It’s almost always linked to particular situations, such as the motorway, driving in the dark, turning across oncoming traffic or big junctions. And it almost always gets smaller when you drive that exact situation again and again, one small step at a time.

That’s why we deliberately take it slowly. Your first lessons stay on quiet streets, and we only move on when you tell us you’re ready. You can ask to pull over at any point, and you can say you’ve had enough for today. If the anxiety is stronger and affects more than your driving, many people also see a traffic psychologist. How we go about it

Small steps: quiet streets first, then busier traffic, then the motorway, in that order.
No time pressure: you move on to the next step when you’re ready, not because a timetable says so.
No marks: there’s no test and no report, and nobody else finds out.
You can stop: you can end any lesson whenever you want, and that isn’t a step backwards.

How many

How many lessons will I need?

Nobody can honestly tell you that in advance, and any number on a website would just be a guess. After your first lesson, your instructor can give you a realistic idea based on how you drive.

After a break: often only a few; If you’ve had your licence for a while and you’re just out of practice, it usually comes back quickly.
One particular situation: We’ll talk about how many after your first lesson.; Things like parking, the motorway or roundabouts can each be practised on their own.
If you’re anxious: more, and that’s completely normal; Driving regularly helps more than driving a lot. One lesson every week is better than five in a single week.

You book one lesson at a time and decide again after each one. If you feel that two lessons were enough, then that’s enough, and we’ll tell you ourselves when we think you’re there.

Costs

How much does a refresher lesson cost?

You only pay for the lessons you actually drive. There’s no package, and because there’s no test there are no test fees either. Anything we charge is on our price list.

What you pay us

Driving lessons: each lesson lasts 45 minutes. For a refresher, two back to back usually work better.
Learning materials: only if you want them. You don’t need them.
Cancelling: if you cancel in good time, it won’t cost you anything. We’ll tell you how much notice we need when you book.
Registration fee: a one-off fee, and you’ll find it on the price list

What you won’t pay

Test fees: none, because there’s no test
Eye test and first aid: not needed, because they’re only for a new licence
Driving licence office fees: none, because the Straßenverkehrsamt (driving licence office) isn’t involved

There are no compulsory lessons, so you decide how many you take. After your first lesson we’ll make a suggestion, but the decision is always yours.
