The short version

What happens when you change driving school?

You apply for your licence at the driving licence office (Straßenverkehrsamt), not at the driving school. So the application belongs to you, and it stays open when you change school. The office simply updates its records to show who's training you now. Nothing else changes.

Your current driving school gives you a training record that lists the theory topics you've covered, how many practice lessons you've had and which mandatory drives you've already done. We carry on from there, so you won't drive anything twice. A theory test you've already passed also stays valid, as long as you take the practical test within twelve months of it.

Requirements

What to bring when you switch

Usually you only need two things: the training record from your current driving school and the details of your licence application. We'll sort out everything else when we first talk.

Training record: Your current driving school gives you this. It shows the theory topics you've covered, the practice lessons you've had and your mandatory drives. Without it, we can't carry your progress over.
Application details: Which office has your application and how far along it is. In Düsseldorf that's the driving licence office at Höherweg 101. You'll find more on our page about the licence application.
Class and plans: Which class you're training for and whether you'd like to change it. Switching school is a good time to move from a manual to B197, for example.
Where you are with your tests: Whether you've already passed the theory test and whether you have a test booked. That decides how we plan the next few weeks.
ID: Your ID card or passport, for the training contract with us.
What you don't need: You already handed in your eye test, first-aid certificate and passport photo with your application, so you don't need to do them again.

Step by step

How switching works

There are five steps, and only one of them takes a while: the driving licence office updating your file. You can already come to theory classes with us before that's done.

Get in touch
Use the pre-registration form, send us a WhatsApp message or just come by at Mindenerstraße 106. Tell us which class you're doing and how far you've got. If you already have your training record, bring it along. If not, that's fine too.
Step 02
Ask for your training record
Ask your current driving school for it in writing. Email is best, because then you have a date on record. The school is required to give it to you. If you're not sure what to write, we'll draft the message for you.
Step 03
Your training contract with us
We go through your progress together and tell you honestly what we think is still missing. Then you sign the training contract. This is the first step that commits you to anything, because the pre-registration doesn't.
Step 04
Updating your file at the driving licence office
The office records that we're now the school training you. How long that takes is up to the office, but in the meantime you can already come to theory classes and have practice lessons.
Step 05
Carry on driving
Once the office has updated your file, we can plan your mandatory drives and book your test. Until then we work on whatever's next for you, so you don't lose a week.

Theory

Your theory carries on straight away

You pick up where you left off. Our 14 topics run in a loop, so you don't have to wait for a new course to begin.

We have classes on six days a week: late afternoon or evening on weekdays, and around midday on Saturdays. Your training record shows which topics you still need, and the theory timetable shows when each one is on. You don't have to repeat topics you've already done, although you're welcome to.

Lessons are taught in German. If something isn't clear, you can ask in English or Arabic and have it explained in that language. At home you can practise the test questions with our learning app.

If you still have the theory test ahead of you, you first take a mock test with us, and we only put you forward to the TÜV once you've passed it. If you've already passed the theory test, it stays valid as long as you take the practical test within twelve months.

Driving

Which of your driving lessons count

Everything on your training record counts. We still start with a drive together, though, so your new instructor can see where you are.

That first lesson with us isn't a test, and we don't treat it like one. Your instructor drives with you around Oberbilk and the roads nearby, and afterwards tells you what they think you still need to work on. That feedback is honest both ways, so if you're further along than you thought, we'll tell you that too.

Any mandatory drives you've already done still count. You don't have to do them again, and we won't charge you for them a second time. We can only book your test once the driving licence office has recorded the change of school.

The other side

What to sort out with your current driving school

Two things are still open there: your training record and the final bill. We can help you with the training record, but the final bill is something you settle directly with your current school.

Ask for your training record in writing. It has to show your full progress, which means the theory topics you've covered, the practice lessons you've had and your mandatory drives. We need it to carry your progress over, and without it you'd have to repeat lessons you've already done. If you're not sure how to ask for it, or something is missing from it, just talk to us and we'll help.

You'll also get a final bill, which should only cover what you actually used. Ask for it in writing too, so both sides have it on paper. We don't get involved in that and we don't judge it either. People change driving school for all sorts of reasons, and none of them are our business.

Until your next test: depends on your progress; If you only have mandatory drives left, you'll be ready quite soon. We'll tell you after the first drive.

Costs

What does switching cost?

With us you pay for the lessons you actually have here. Switching doesn't mean paying a second base fee for registration. All our prices are on the price list.

Registration: no second base fee, because you're already registered
Driving lessons: only the ones you have with us. Each lasts 45 minutes.
Learning material: access to the learning app, if you still need it
Presenting you for the test: for any tests you still have to take

What's handled elsewhere

Final bill: with your current driving school, for what you used there
Test fees: paid to the TÜV, for any tests you still have to take
Eye test and first aid: already done for your application
