The short version

What is an intensive course?

An intensive course is the normal training for class B, fitted into less time. You cover the same 14 theory topics, have the same practice lessons and the same twelve mandatory drives, and take the same two tests. Only your diary looks different.

Rather than spreading the topics over many weeks, you have your classes one after another and finish all 14 in just over two weeks, driving at the same time. You won't need a single lesson fewer, but you skip the waiting between lessons.

Tests: the theory test and the practical test at the TÜV, the same as on any course

Requirements

What you need for the intensive course

You need the same documents as for any registration, only sooner. Because we send in the application for you, your eye test, first-aid course and passport photo should be sorted before the course begins.

Age: You can register for the intensive course from 16½. With BF17 you can take the theory test three months before your 17th birthday at the earliest, and the practical test one month before it. Without BF17 the same rule applies, counted from your 18th birthday.
Time: The course takes a lot of time in a short stretch. School holidays, annual leave or the weeks between leaving school and starting an apprenticeship work well for it. It won't fit around a full working day.
Application: On the intensive course we send your application to the driving licence office in Düsseldorf at Höherweg 101 as a fast-track application, and it's usually through in two days. For that we need all of your documents. You'll find the full list on our page about the licence application.
Eye test and first aid: You need both for the application. You can have the eye test (Sehtest) at an officially approved test centre, an optician for example. The first-aid course (Erste-Hilfe-Kurs) is 9 lessons of 45 minutes and is run by approved providers.
Passport photo and ID: You need a biometric passport photo and your ID card or passport. Both go in with the application.
Language: Lessons are taught in German. Under Anlage 7 FeV, you may also take the theory test in one of 14 foreign languages. You can check which ones TÜV Rheinland actually offers here on its website (Source: tuv.com, opens in a new tab).

Step by step

How the intensive course works

There are six steps. We send in the application for you, and the TÜV gives out the test dates.

Step 01
Pre-registration and an honest chat
Fill in the pre-registration form or come by at Mindenerstraße 106. We'll look together at how many days you actually have free and when you could start. If the time isn't enough, we'll tell you at the beginning rather than in week two.
Step 02
Fast-track application to the driving licence office
The TÜV can only test you once your application has been processed. That's why, on the intensive course, we send it to the driving licence office in Düsseldorf at Höherweg 101 as a fast-track application, and it's usually through in two days. All we need from you are your documents: eye test, first-aid course, passport photo and ID.
Step 03
All the theory in one go
You have 14 double lessons of 90 minutes each, one after another. If you already hold a licence for another class, you only need eight. The theory timetable shows which topic is on when.
Step 04
Driving lessons at the same time
We book your driving lessons in the same weeks as your classes. The twelve mandatory drives come once most of your basic training is behind you.
Step 05
Theory test at the TÜV
Before that you take a mock test with us, and we only put you forward to the TÜV once you've passed it. At home you can practise the test questions with our learning app, which you can book as an extra.
Step 06
Practical test
The test lasts 55 minutes, with at least 30 minutes of driving in Düsseldorf traffic. Your instructor and a TÜV examiner are in the car with you, and we book the test when you're ready. After that you get your licence and spend the first two years on probation.

Theory

The theory in just over two weeks

You cover the same amount as on the normal course: 14 double lessons of 90 minutes, twelve on the basics and two specific to class B. If you already have a licence, you need eight.

On the intensive course you take these double lessons one after another. Our 14 topics run in a continuous loop anyway, so you don't have to wait for a new course to start. Once your registration has gone through, you join in and work through every topic in one round.

Lessons are taught in German. If something isn't clear, you can ask in English, Arabic or Berber and have it explained in that language. At home you practise the test questions, for example with the learning app, which you can book as an extra. At this pace it's worth setting aside time for that every day.

Before the theory test you take a mock test with us, and we only put you forward to the TÜV once you've passed it. That way you don't go in unprepared, which matters even more on an intensive course: if you fail, you have to wait two weeks before you can try again, and your schedule doesn't have two weeks to spare.

Driving

Driving lessons during the theory weeks

Your driving lessons happen during the course weeks, not afterwards. After the first few lessons your instructor will tell you how many practice lessons you're likely to need.

A driving lesson lasts 45 minutes. You start by getting to know the car, then move on to junctions, roundabouts and the traffic in and around Oberbilk. Because there isn't much time between lessons on an intensive course, your instructor can carry on straight from where you stopped last time.

The twelve mandatory drives (Sonderfahrten) are required by law and cover country roads, the motorway and driving in the dark. They come once most of your basic training is done. They're part of the training rather than an extra, and we only book your practical test once you've done them.

The tests

Theory test: on a computer at the TÜV. We book you in once you've passed the mock test with us.
Practical test: at the TÜV, 55 minutes, with at least 30 minutes of driving
If you don't pass: you wait two weeks before the next attempt. On an intensive course, that's where the schedule falls apart.

To be honest

Who the intensive course isn't right for

The course works well if you have a clear stretch of free time. If any of the four points below sounds like you, you'll get on better with the normal training.

We don't sell the intensive course as the better option, because it isn't. It's the same training at a faster pace, and that pace leaves very little room for things to go wrong. If you're ill for a week, a test date gets moved or you fail an attempt, you end up where you would have been without the course.

That's why we talk about it before you register, not afterwards. If we don't think it'll work for you, we'll say so. You can start the normal training at any time, because we run theory eight times a week and the 14 topics go round in a loop, so any class day is a good day to start.

When something else suits you better

You don't have two free weeks: Then the normal training is more relaxed. Theory runs eight times a week, and you fit your driving lessons in where they suit you.
You'd rather learn the questions at your own pace: 14 topics in one go is a lot to take in. If you revise over several weeks, you often feel more confident going into the theory test.
You still feel very unsure behind the wheel: Learning to drive needs repetition, and it needs breaks in between too. You can't squeeze that into as little time as you like.
Your documents aren't complete yet: Without the eye test, first-aid course and passport photo we can't send off the fast-track application, and without a processed application you can't get a test date. In that case we'd rather move the course than have you waste it.

How long

How long does it really take?

The theory takes just over two weeks. Getting the licence in your hand takes longer, and most of that time goes on the test dates at the TÜV.

Test dates: depends on availability; The TÜV sets the dates for the theory and practical tests. We book you in as soon as you're ready.

If you bring your eye test, first-aid certificate and passport photo when you register, you won't lose any time. If something's missing, the fast-track application can only go off once you've handed it in.

What does the intensive course cost?

The intensive course has its own registration and its own base fee, and driving lessons on it have their own price. You'll find both on our price list.

Driving lessons: each lesson lasts 45 minutes and has its own price on the intensive course
Presenting you for the test: charged once for the theory test and once for the practical test
