The basics

What is B96?

B96 isn't a separate licence class. It's a code that goes on your licence next to class B. With class B on its own, you can always tow a trailer of up to 750 kg, and a heavier one only if car and trailer together weigh no more than 3,500 kg. Code 96 raises that limit to 4,250 kg, which is where most normal caravans and horse trailers end up when they're behind an ordinary car.

You don't take a test for it. Instead you do a course with us that lasts at least seven hours in total: two and a half hours of theory and four and a half hours of driving. At the end you get a certificate, and with that the driving licence office (Straßenverkehrsamt) adds the 96 to your licence. If you want to tow more, up to 7,000 kg, you need class BE, which has a practical test.

What you need

What do I need for B96?

Less than for any other class, because there's no test. To get the code on your licence, the driving licence regulations (Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung) ask for proof that you've done the course, and then you make a short application at the licence office.

Class B: You need class B. You can also do the course while you're training for class B with us, and then the 96 goes straight onto your first licence.
Age: 18, or 17 with BF17, in which case you drive the car and trailer with an accompanying person until you're 18. You can register with us from 16.5.
For the course: Your driving licence, or your ID if you're still training for class B.
To add the code: Our certificate, your licence, your ID and a biometric passport photo, because the office issues you a new licence card.
Application: You apply to have the code added at the Straßenverkehrsamt Düsseldorf, Höherweg 101. Our page on the licence application explains the rest.
What you want to tow: Tell us which trailer you're planning to tow, ideally with the vehicle registration documents. If car and trailer together weigh more than 4,250 kg, you need class BE, and we'll tell you that before the course rather than after it.

Step by step

How B96 works with us

There are four steps. The course itself is only seven hours, so most of the time is spent waiting for the licence office afterwards.

Step 01
Pre-register
Use the pre-registration form or just come in to Mindenerstraße 106. We check with you whether B96 covers your car and trailer, and we arrange the dates for the course.
Step 02
Theory: two and a half hours
You learn what changes when you tow: how to load the trailer, what nose weight is, how car and trailer behave when you brake and go round bends, what to check when you hitch up, and the rules for motorways and parking. The course is in German, and you can ask questions in English, Arabic or Berber.
Step 03
Driving: four and a half hours
At least three and a half hours of driving exercises: hitching and unhitching, braking, reversing and parking. Then you spend an hour driving the car and trailer in Düsseldorf traffic. At the end we give you a certificate to show you've done the course.
Step 04
Add the code at the licence office
Take the certificate, your licence, your ID and a passport photo to the Straßenverkehrsamt Düsseldorf, Höherweg 101, and apply to have the code added. The office issues a new licence with code 96 on it. You can only tow the heavier trailer once the code is on your licence.

The course

What happens in the seven hours

The law sets a minimum of seven full hours of 60 minutes each, split between theory, driving exercises and a drive in traffic.

You already know the rules of the road, so the theory part covers what a trailer adds: maximum authorised mass and nose weight, how to load properly, and how car and trailer behave when you brake, take a bend or drive in a crosswind. In the driving exercises we practise hitching and unhitching and, above all, reversing, because the trailer turns the opposite way to the car.

To finish, you drive the car and trailer for an hour in Düsseldorf traffic with your instructor beside you, and then we issue your certificate. It helps if you've towed a trailer before, but you don't need any experience to take part. Seven hours is the legal minimum, so the course can't be shorter, even if you've towed for years.

How the seven hours are split

Theory: two and a half hours on loading, nose weight, handling, hitching and the rules
Driving exercises: at least three and a half hours of hitching, unhitching, braking, reversing and parking
Drive in traffic: one hour with the car and trailer on public roads
Total: at least seven hours of 60 minutes each

After the course

Test: none. There's no theory test and no practical test at TÜV.
Certificate: we give it to you at the end of the course
Code on your licence: added by the Straßenverkehrsamt, which issues a new licence with code 96

B96 or BE

Is B96 enough for my trailer, or do I need BE?

Two figures from the vehicle registration documents decide it: the maximum authorised mass of your trailer and of your car. Added together, they give you the weight of the combination.

If car and trailer together come to 3,500 kg or less, class B is enough. Up to 4,250 kg, B96 will do. Above that, up to 7,000 kg, you need class BE, with driving lessons, five mandatory drives and a practical test. If the trailer on its own is heavier than 3,500 kg, a car licence no longer covers it at all.

What counts is always the maximum authorised mass in the registration document, not the empty weight and not what you actually put in the trailer. Here's an example: a 1,800 kg caravan and a 2,200 kg car make 4,000 kg, so B96 is enough. Hitch the same caravan to a car rated at 2,600 kg and you're at 4,400 kg, so you need BE. Bring the registration documents and we'll go through the figures with you before you book the course.

Which class for which car and trailer

Class B: A trailer up to 750 kg is always fine. A heavier one only if car and trailer together weigh no more than 3,500 kg.
B96: Car and trailer up to 4,250 kg. A seven-hour course with no test.
Class BE: Trailers up to 3,500 kg, and car and trailer up to 7,000 kg. You have driving lessons, five mandatory drives and a practical test.

Timing

How long does B96 take?

The course is the quick part. After that you're waiting for the licence office, and that wait is by far the longest part of getting B96.

Course: seven hours; That's the legal minimum. We arrange the dates with you.
Code added at the office: up to 12 weeks; That's how long the Düsseldorf driving licence office says it can take to add to a licence. It issues a new licence card with the 96, and you can only tow the heavier trailer once you have it.
Test: none; You don't have to wait for a test date, which is what makes B96 quicker than BE.

If you need the trailer by a certain date, for example for a move, the start of the season or a holiday, work backwards from that date: up to twelve weeks at the licence office, and the course before that.

How much does B96 cost?

B96 has no test, so you don't pay any test fees. What the registration costs is on our price list.
