The basics

What is class BE?

A class Blicence always lets you tow a trailer of up to 750 kg. You can tow a heavier one too, but only if the car and trailer together weigh no more than 3,500 kg. For anything bigger you need BE, which covers trailers up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass, so car and trailer can weigh up to 7,000 kg together. That's enough for any caravan, horse trailer or boat trailer a car is allowed to pull.

BE adds a class to the licence you already have, so you don't start again from scratch. There are no theory lessons and there's no theory test. You have driving lessons with a trailer, do five mandatory drives and take one practical test at TÜV Rheinland. If your car and trailer together weigh 4,250 kg or less, B96may be all you need. That's a course with no test at the end.

What you need

What do I need for class BE?

Because you already hold class B, the application is shorter than it was for your first licence. Here's what you organise yourself and what to bring along.

Class B: You need a valid class B licence. You bring it with you when you apply, and at the end you get a new licence that includes BE.
Age: 18, or 17 if you do it with BF17, in which case you drive with an accompanying person until you're 18. With BF17 you can register from 16.5, and the practical test can be one month before your 17th birthday at the earliest.
Eye test and first aid: You need an eye test (Sehtest) that's no more than two years old. You don't have to repeat the first-aid course (Erste-Hilfe-Kurs) if you already showed the certificate for class B.
Photo and ID: The licence office needs a biometric passport photo and your ID for this as well.
Application: You apply to add the class at the driving licence office (Straßenverkehrsamt) Düsseldorf, Höherweg 101. Our page on the licence application explains how it works.
What you want to tow: When you register, tell us which trailer you're planning to tow. If car and trailer together stay under 4,250 kg, B96may be enough, and we'll tell you if that's the case.

Step by step

How class BE works with us

There are five steps. As there's no theory, you can start driving as soon as your application is in.

Step 01
Pre-register
Send us the pre-registration or come in to Mindenerstraße 106. We talk about what you want to tow, whether you need BE or B96, and when you can start.
Step 02
Apply at the licence office
You hand in the application at the Straßenverkehrsamt Düsseldorf, Höherweg 101. Bring your licence, a recent eye test, a passport photo and your ID. The office then needs several weeks, and no driving school can speed that up. Meanwhile you're already having your driving lessons.
Step 03
Driving lessons with a trailer
First you learn what changes when there's a trailer on the back: hitching and unhitching, the safety check before you set off, reversing, and how bends and stopping distances feel with a longer vehicle. Then you go out into traffic. How many practice lessons you need depends on whether you've towed before.
Step 04
The five mandatory drives
The law requires three drives on country roads, one on the motorway and one at dusk or in the dark, each lasting 45 minutes. They're the same at every driving school.
Step 05
Practical test and new licence
When you're driving safely, your instructor books your test at TÜV Rheinland. It takes 55 minutes, and you drive our car and trailer. If you pass, the examiner usually hands you your new licence with class BE straight away.

Driving

Driving lessons with a trailer

BE training is all practical: as many practice lessons as you need, plus the five mandatory drives (Sonderfahrten). Each lesson is 45 minutes, in our car with our trailer.

You begin with the things that are new when you tow. That means hitching and unhitching, the safety check, and reversing, which is tricky at first because the trailer turns the opposite way to the car. We keep practising until you've got it. After that you drive in Düsseldorf traffic and learn how a longer, heavier vehicle behaves on bends, how much space it needs and how it brakes.

If you've towed a trailer before, you'll usually need fewer lessons. If you haven't, reversing is the part that takes a little time. There's no set number of lessons. After each one your instructor tells you how you're doing, and books your test once you're driving safely.

The practical test

How long: 55 minutes, with at least 30 minutes of actual driving
What's tested: getting the vehicle ready, coupling and uncoupling the trailer, set manoeuvres and driving in traffic
Theory test: none. There are no theory lessons and no theory test for class BE.
Afterwards: The examiner usually gives you your new licence with BE straight away. You don't start a new probationary period.

BE or B96

B96 or BE: which do I need for my trailer?

It comes down to two figures in the vehicle registration documents: the maximum authorised mass of your trailer and of your car. Add them together and you have the weight of the whole combination.

If car and trailer together come to 3,500 kg or less, class B is enough. Up to 4,250 kg, B96will do. That's a course of at least seven hours with us and no test, and afterwards code 96 goes on your licence. Above that, up to 7,000 kg, you need BE. If the trailer on its own is heavier than 3,500 kg, a car licence no longer covers it at all.

The figure that counts is always the maximum authorised mass in the registration document. The empty weight doesn't matter, and neither does how much you actually load. For example, a 1,800 kg caravan behind a 2,200 kg car makes 4,000 kg, so B96 is enough. Put the same caravan behind a bigger car rated at 2,600 kg and you need BE. Bring your registration documents and we'll work it out with you.

Timing

How long does class BE take?

It's quicker than a first licence because there's no theory at all. That leaves five mandatory drives, your practice lessons and the wait for the licence office, which usually takes longer than the training.

Application at the office: up to 12 weeks; That's how long the Düsseldorf driving licence office says it can take to add a class. If you apply at the start, the wait runs alongside your lessons.
Driving lessons: 5 mandatory drives plus practice; Three on country roads, one on the motorway and one in the dark. How much practice you need first mostly depends on manoeuvring, because reversing with a trailer takes some getting used to.
Test: one test at TÜV; One practical test and no theory test. You get a date once your instructor books it.

At two lessons a week, you'll have done the five mandatory drives in a little over two weeks. That means the application decides how long it all takes, which is why we talk about it at your first appointment.

Costs

How much does a class BE licence cost?

We don't have a fixed price for BE, and we think that's fair. Someone who has towed before needs fewer lessons and shouldn't pay the same as someone who's never done it. Each individual price is on our price list.

Passport photo: a biometric photo from a photographer or a photo booth

You pay for each BE lesson separately, so if you need fewer lessons, you pay less. You don't have to buy a package.
