What is class B?

Class B is the licence for cars. You can get it from the age of 18, and it's valid across the EU. The list on this page shows exactly what it lets you drive.

There are two variations. With BF17 you can start driving at 17, but until your 18th birthday you always need a registered accompanying person with you. With B197 you take your test in an automatic and are still allowed to drive any car afterwards, manuals included.

What you can drive with class B

Cars and vans: up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass
Passenger seats: up to 8, not counting the driver's seat
Trailers: up to 750 kg, or heavier as long as car and trailer together weigh no more than 3,500 kg
Also included: class AM (mopeds and scooters up to 45 km/h) and class L (tractors up to 40 km/h)
Where it's valid: in every EU country

Requirements

What you need for the licence

Before your application can go to the driving licence office (Straßenverkehrsamt), a few things have to be in place. Here's the list, including the parts you sort out yourself.

Age: You can register with us from 16½. With BF17 you drive from 17 with someone accompanying you; without it you drive on your own from 18. The earliest you can take the theory test is three months before your 17th or 18th birthday, and the practical test one month before it.
Eye test and first-aid course: Your eye test (Sehtest) can't be more than two years old when you apply, and any optician can do it. The first-aid course (Erste-Hilfe-Kurs) takes one day, and the certificate never runs out.
Passport photo and ID: You'll need one biometric passport photo and your ID card or passport.
Residence: Your main home has to be in Germany, which means you live here for at least 185 days a year.
Language: By law (Anlage 7 FeV), you can take the theory test in German or in one of 14 foreign languages. Which of them TÜV Rheinland offers in Düsseldorf is listed on TÜV Rheinland's website (Source: tuv.com, opens in a new tab).

Step by step

How the training works

There are six steps. Theory and your first driving lessons happen while the office is still working on your application, so you don't have to wait for it to come through before you start.

Step 01
Pre-registration
Fill in the pre-registrationonline or come by at Mindenerstraße 106. We'll get back to you to talk about the class, the gearbox and when you'd like to start. Nothing is binding until you sign the training contract.
Step 02
Applying at the licence office
You hand in the application yourself at the Straßenverkehrsamt Düsseldorf, Höherweg 101, with the documents listed above. Our page on applying for your licence explains what happens there.
Step 03
Theory classes
While the application is being processed, you're already going to theory classes. You can join on any day we teach.
Step 04
Theory test
You take the theory test (Theorieprüfung) on a computer at TÜV Rheinland. We clear you for it as soon as you've passed our mock test, and then you book the date yourself.
Step 05
Driving lessons
You start with practice lessons on quiet roads and work your way up to the mandatory drives.
Step 06
Practical test
Your instructor books your test once you're driving safely. You drive our school car, with your instructor next to you and the examiner in the back. If you pass, the examiner normally gives you your licence on the spot.

Theory

Theory classes

Theory is 14 double lessons of 90 minutes: twelve on the basics that every class shares, and two that are specific to class B. If you already hold another licence, you only need six of the basic ones plus the two class B lessons.

On weekdays classes start in the late afternoon or the evening, and on Saturdays around midday. The 14 topics run in a loop, which is why you can start on any class day. The theory timetable shows which topic is on when.

Lessons are taught in German. If you don't understand something, your instructor will explain it in English, Arabic or Berber. At home you can practise with our learning app. Before the theory test you take a mock test with us, and we only clear you at the TÜV once you've passed it.

Driving

Practical training

There are two kinds of driving lesson, and each one lasts 45 minutes. Practice lessons are planned with your instructor, and you take as many as you need. The twelve mandatory drives (Sonderfahrten) are required by law.

Your first lessons are on quiet streets, where you learn to pull away, change gear, steer and park. After that you move into Düsseldorf's city traffic and onto the kind of routes the test uses, and finally you do the mandatory drives. After every lesson your instructor tells you how you're getting on.

We train in manual cars. If you'd like to take the test in an automatic and still be allowed to drive anything afterwards, that's B197. If you only ever want to drive automatics, it's B78.

The twelve mandatory drives for class B

Country-road drives: 5
Motorway drives: 4
Drives at dusk or in the dark: 3
Total: 12

The two tests

Theory test: 30 questions on a screen. You pass with 10 error points or fewer, so getting two 5-point questions wrong means you fail.
Practical test: 55 minutes, with at least 30 minutes of actual driving. The examiner tells you the result as soon as you've finished.
After the test: A two-year probationary period (Probezeit), starting on the day your licence is issued.

How long

How long does the class B licence take?

Three parts of the timeline can be counted, and one can't. The countable parts are below. What nobody can tell you before your first drive is how many practice lessons you'll need.

Application at the office: up to 12 weeks; That's the processing time the Straßenverkehrsamt Düsseldorf gives. You're allowed to apply six months in advance. Applying early costs you nothing, but if you apply late, the application is what you'll end up waiting for.
Theory: 14 double lessons; With eight classes a week, that's just under two weeks on paper. On the intensive coursethey're fixed over 14 days.
Driving lessons: 12 mandatory drives plus practice; Work it out at your own pace. At two lessons a week the mandatory drives alone take six weeks, and at four a week they take three.

It's quickest when these three run side by side rather than one after the other. The rest is down to TÜV Rheinland, which hands out the test dates. Once you've passed the theory test, you have twelve months to take the practical one.

Costs

What does the class B licence cost?

We can't honestly give you a fixed total, because most of the cost is practice lessons and everyone needs a different number of them. What we can give you are the individual prices, and you'll find them all on our price list.

Registration: a one-off base fee for your training
Driving lessons: 45 minutes each. With us every driving lesson costs the same, the mandatory drives included.
Practical test presentation: charged once per test, and the school car is included
Learning app: optional, for practising the theory questions

What you pay elsewhere

Test fees: paid to TÜV Rheinland for the theory test and the practical test
Application fee: paid to the Straßenverkehrsamt Düsseldorf
Eye test and first-aid course: at the optician and with the course provider
Passport photo: biometric, from a photographer or a photo booth

There's no package you have to buy in advance. You pay for the lessons you've actually driven.
