You test from the age of 17 and travel with your registered companion. At 18 you no longer need to be accompanied - and you have real driving experience under your belt.

Registration from 16.5 years old - theory lessons from 16.75, practice from 16.92, theory test at the earliest 3 months, practical test at the earliest 1 month before the 17th birthday (§ 10 Paragraph 1 FeV). At 17 you will receive the test certificate. Processing time at the Düsseldorf Road Traffic Office, Höherweg 101: 4-6 weeks. It's worth registering early - so you can get started straight away on your 17th birthday.
