BF17 is short for begleitetes Fahren ab 17, which means accompanied driving from 17. You pass your test at 17, and until your 18th birthday you drive with an adult who's registered as your accompanying person.

The basics

What is BF17?

BF17 is the normal class B car licence with one condition: until you turn 18, you can only drive when someone named in your application is sitting next to you. Everything else is the same as class B, so you do the same theory, the same mandatory drives and the same two tests. You simply do it all a year earlier.

At 17 you don't get a licence card yet. You get a test certificate (Prüfbescheinigung) instead, and together with your ID that counts as your licence until your 18th birthday. It's only valid in Germany and Austria. Once you're 18, you apply for the normal class B card and can drive on your own.

What you need

What do I need for BF17?

You need everything a class B learner needs, plus a parent's signature and at least one adult to go with you. Here's what you organise yourself and what we sort out together.

Age: You can register with us from 16.5. If you want to drive on your 17th birthday, that's also the right time to start, because the licence office can take up to twelve weeks, the theory test is allowed three months before your birthday and the practical test one month before.
Your parents' consent: While you're under 18, your parents or legal guardians sign the licence application and the training contract with you.
Accompanying persons: You need at least one, and you can have more. Each person is named in the application and checked by the licence office. The rules they have to meet are further down this page.
Eye test and first aid: You can get the eye test (Sehtest) at an optician, and it mustn't be more than two years old when you apply. You also need a first-aid course (Erste-Hilfe-Kurs), which takes nine 45-minute sessions. You only do it once, because the certificate never expires.
Photo and ID: A biometric passport photo and your ID card or passport.
Application: You hand in the application yourself at the driving licence office (Straßenverkehrsamt) Düsseldorf, Höherweg 101. Our page on the licence application explains how it works.

Step by step

How BF17 works with us

There are six steps, just like class B. What's different is the start and the finish: you begin at 16.5, and once you've passed you drive with someone beside you for a while.

Step 01
Pre-register from 16.5
Fill in the pre-registration online, or come in with your parents to Mindenerstraße 106. We work backwards from your 17th birthday with you, so you know when to start for the test dates to fit. Nothing is binding until you sign the training contract, and your parents sign it too.
Step 02
Apply at the licence office
You hand in your application at the Straßenverkehrsamt Düsseldorf, Höherweg 101. Bring your eye test, first-aid certificate, passport photo, ID and your parents' consent form, and name your accompanying persons on the form. It can take up to twelve weeks to process, so it's best to apply as soon as you've registered with us.
Step 03
Theory lessons
While the office works on your application, you can already go to theory lessons. There are 14 double lessons, we run them on six days a week, and you can join at any point. The theory timetable shows which topic is on when.
Step 04
Theory test
You take the theory test at TÜV Rheinland, three months before your 17th birthday at the earliest. We put you forward once you've passed our mock test.
Step 05
Driving lessons and practical test
You do your practice lessons and the twelve mandatory drives. The practical test can be one month before your 17th birthday at the earliest. It takes 55 minutes, with your instructor next to you and the examiner in the back.
Step 06
Certificate at 17, licence card at 18
Once you've passed, you get your test certificate, on your 17th birthday at the earliest. From then on you drive with your accompanying person. When you turn 18, you collect your licence card from the Straßenverkehrsamt and can drive alone.

Theory

Theory lessons

BF17 has the same theory as class B: 14 double lessons of 90 minutes, twelve on the general topics and two on topics specific to cars. You can start as soon as you register at 16.5.

We teach theory on six days a week. On weekdays the lessons are in the late afternoon or evening and on Saturdays around midday, so they're easy to fit in after school. The 14 topics run in a loop, which means you can join straight after you register. Check the theory timetable to see which topic is on which day.

The lessons are in German. If something isn't clear, you can ask in English or Arabic and we'll explain it in that language. To practise at home you can also book our learning app, which has every question from the test.

The theory test is allowed three months before your 17th birthday at the earliest. Before that, you take a mock test with us, and once you pass it we put you forward at TÜV Rheinland. That way you're ready as soon as the date allows.

Driving

Learning to drive

You take as many practice lessons as you need, plus the twelve mandatory drives (Sonderfahrten) that the law requires. Each lesson is 45 minutes. The only real difference from class B is when you're allowed to take the tests.

Your first lessons are on quiet roads, where you get used to the car. After that you move on to Düsseldorf city traffic, the roads used in the test and the mandatory drives. You'll see along the way how many practice lessons you need, and your instructor tells you after each lesson how you're getting on.

We normally teach in a manual car. You can combine BF17 with B197if you'd like to take the test in an automatic but still be allowed to drive a manual, or with B78 if you only ever want to drive automatics.

When you can take each test

Theory test: three months before your 17th birthday at the earliest. You answer 30 questions on a screen and pass with 10 error points or fewer.
Practical test: one month before your 17th birthday at the earliest. It lasts 55 minutes, and at least 30 of them are spent driving.
Test certificate: you get it after passing, on your 17th birthday at the earliest. Until you're 18, it works as your licence together with your ID.

Your accompanying person

Who can go with you

Your accompanying person sits in the passenger seat while you drive. They aren't an instructor and don't take the wheel. They're there so you can learn from their experience. It's usually a parent, but anyone who meets the conditions can do it.

There's no limit on how many people you register. It could be your mum, your dad, an older brother or sister, an aunt or a family friend. Every person is named in the application, checked by the licence office and written on your test certificate, and you can add someone later. You may only drive when one of them is sitting beside you.

There are rules for both of you on every drive. You must have no alcohol at all and no other drugs, and your accompanying person can have no more than 0.5 per mille. If you drive without a registered person beside you, your driving licence (Fahrerlaubnis) is taken away and you get a fine as well. You can only get it back after a follow-up course for new drivers (Aufbauseminar).

What your accompanying person needs

Age: 30 or older
Licence: class B for at least five years in a row
Points: one point at most on the driver register in Flensburg
Registration: named in your application and on your test certificate; you can register several people
While you drive: 0.5 per mille of alcohol at most, and no other drugs

Timing

When should I start if I want to drive at 17?

At 16.5. That comes straight from the dates: the licence office can take up to twelve weeks, the theory test is allowed three months before your 17th birthday and the practical test one month before.

Application at the office: up to 12 weeks; The Düsseldorf driving licence office accepts your application six months before your 17th birthday and can take up to twelve weeks to process it. Those two numbers are why 16.5 is the right age to start.
Theory: 14 double lessons; There are eight lessons a week, in the late afternoon, in the evening and on Saturday lunchtime, so it works alongside school. On paper you could finish in just under two weeks, and in the school holidays there's also our intensive course.
Driving lessons: 12 mandatory drives plus practice; The twelve mandatory drives are fixed, and how much practice you need before them depends on you. At two lessons a week, the mandatory drives alone take six weeks, so plan them for before your birthday.

Work backwards from your 17th birthday: the practical test one month before, your driving lessons before that, the theory test from three months before, and the application right at the beginning. We go through these dates with you when you register.

Costs

How much does BF17 cost?

BF17 costs the same as class B, because the training is the same. We can't give you a total, because nobody knows in advance how many practice lessons you'll need, and they're the biggest part of the bill. You'll find every single price on our price list. The only extra cost is the office fee for registering your accompanying persons.
