topic 10.
Stationary traffic.

As soon as you stop, stationary traffic begins. Topic 10 explains the difference between stopping and parking, all no-parking restrictions, the correct use of the parking disc and, above all, what you have to do if you cause damage while parking.

What you learn.

Learning objectives for topic 10

  • The difference between stopping and parking (3 minutes / not for loading/unloading)
  • Where you are never allowed to stop or park (10 m rule, 5 m rule, no parking)
  • How to set the parking disc correctly (to the next half hour or full hour)
  • How to park safely in and out of parking spaces (longitudinal, perpendicular, diagonal parking)
  • What you have to do after a parking collision (duty to wait, police)
  • Which special rules apply in residential areas and residential parking zones
  • What obligations you have when leaving the vehicle (secure, lock, theft protection)

The most important rules.

Core rules from topic 10

Rule 1

Hold ≤ 3 minutes or loading/unloading

Hold = Stop up to 3 minutes or for loading/unloading or getting in/out. Parking = everything above and beyond. In the 'restricted parking ban' (286), stopping is permitted but parking is prohibited.

Rule 2

10 m rule before intersections and traffic lights

Parking is prohibited within 10 meters of a St. Andrew's cross, in front of and behind a traffic light or stop sign - otherwise the view is blocked.

Rule 3

5 m rule before intersections

There is a 5 meter parking ban before and behind an intersection or junction - measured from the start/end of the shared roadway. Classic city trap.

Rule 4

Parking collision = obligation to wait

Even a small scratch on the neighboring car means you have to wait. Rule of thumb: wait 30-60 minutes or call the police. A note on the window is NOT enough - it is a hit-and-run (§ 142 StGB).

Rule 5

Adjust the parking disc correctly

For the next half or full hour AFTER arrival. Example: Arrival 2:17 p.m. → parking disc set to 2:30 p.m. Parking discs must be easy to read from the outside. Manipulation = fine.

Common mistakes.

What goes wrong in the theory test

Error 1

Parking on the sidewalk - 'looks ok'

Parking on the sidewalk is only permitted if a traffic sign or marking specifically allows it. Otherwise: €55 + more if disabled + point.

Error 2

Settle parking collisions 'with a note'

No matter how polite the note, without sufficient waiting time or a police report, it is a hit-and-run. Criminal proceedings possible, insurance does not pay.

Error 3

Park in front of courtyard entrances

Forbidden - even if you just get something for a short time. Parking or stopping in front of yard entrances costs €35-55 and may trigger a tow.

Error 4

Confuse limited vs. absolute parking ban

Limited stopping ban (286, crossed out): short stops for loading/unloading are permitted. Absolute (283, fully crossed out): nothing works. Standard exam question.

In theory test style

Question 1

They cause a scratch on the neighboring car when parking. What do you do?

AnswerStop, wait a reasonable time (at least 30 minutes); If no one comes, call the police.

Note on the window without waiting or reporting = hit-and-run (§ 142 StGB).

Question 2

You see the traffic sign 'Restricted No Parking'. What are you allowed to do?

AnswerHolds up to 3 minutes or for loading/unloading/getting in/out. Parking is prohibited.

With the 'absolute no stopping' rule (sign 283), short stopping is also prohibited.

Question 3

You park your vehicle. What is the minimum distance to the next intersection?

Answer5 meters — both in front of and behind.

In front of traffic lights, stop signs and St. Andrew's crosses, even 10 meters.

Connection to practice.

This is how the theme shows up 10 in your driving lesson

In Düsseldorf - especially in Oberbilk and Friedrichstadt - parking space is scarce. You practice parallel, perpendicular and diagonal parking down to the last detail. Your driving instructor will show you hot spots like Mindenerstrasse or Achenbachstrasse, where no-parking zones are easily overlooked. During the practical test, parking (longitudinal or transverse) is always part of the mandatory list.
