What you learn.

Learning objectives for topic 1

  • Which minimum ages apply for classes B, BF17 and B197 and when an exception is possible
  • What evidence you need when registering at the road traffic office (eye test, first aid, passport photo)
  • What driving ability means — physical, mental, emotional
  • Why fatigue, stress, anger and time pressure drastically worsen reaction times
  • How to honestly assess your own limits and take responsibility for your condition
  • What role vision, hearing and responsiveness play in safe driving
  • Why personal suitability remains an ongoing task - even after passing the exam

The most important rules.

Core rules from topic 1

Rule 1

Minimum age is non-negotiable

Class B: 18 years. BF17 (accompanied driving): 17 years with registered accompanying person. Before the minimum age, the theory test may take place at the earliest three months before the child's 18th birthday and the practical test at the earliest one month before the child's 18th birthday.

Rule 2

Eye test must not be older than 2 years

When registering, you must present a passed eye test certificate - taken by an ophthalmologist or optician. If your vision is not sufficient, you will need glasses or contact lenses, which will later be recorded as a requirement on your driving license.

Rule 3

First aid course is mandatory

A recognized life-saving emergency response course (at least 9 teaching units of 45 minutes each) must be completed before registration. In Düsseldorf, DRK, Johanniter, Malteser and ASB regularly offer weekend courses.

Rule 4

Driving ability is your responsibility

Nobody checks whether you are really fit to drive before every trip - you have to do that yourself. Fatigue, illness, medication, alcohol or strong emotions impair your ability to drive. If in doubt: leave it standing, take the train, call a taxi.

Rule 5

Vision is life insurance

We absorb more than 90% of all traffic-related information through our eyes. If you don't see well, you react too late. People who wear glasses or contact lenses are obliged to wear their visual aids while driving - a violation will result in a fine.

Common mistakes.

What goes wrong in the theory test

Error 1

Confuse minimum age and exam deadlines

Many students do not know that theory and practical exams can take place before their 18th birthday. Anyone who overlooks this will lose weeks.

Error 2

underestimate fatigue

The theory test often asks about the risks of microsleep. The wrong answer is often 'coffee makes you fit again' - the correct answer is 'short break, maybe 15 minutes of sleep'.

Error 3

Classify medications as harmless

Non-prescription medications (antihistamines, cough syrup, some painkillers) can also impair your ability to drive. The following applies during the test: if the message 'may impair your ability to react' is indicated - do not drive.

Error 4

Only discover visual performance during an eye test

If you fail the eye test, you can still drive with glasses - but you will lose days. Before the appointment, honestly test for yourself whether signs can still be read from 50 m.

Sample questions.

In theory test style

Question 1

How old do you have to be at least to get a Class B driving license?

Answer18 years - or 17 years for accompanied driving (BF17) with a registered accompanying person.

However, the theoretical exam may be taken no earlier than 3 months before the minimum age, and the practical exam may be taken no earlier than 1 month before the minimum age.

Question 2

You haven't slept for more than 24 hours. Are you allowed to drive a car?

AnswerNo. Sleep deprivation of more than 17 hours has the same effect as 0.5 ‰ alcohol; After 24 hours, the ability to drive is severely restricted.

Even without a legal ban, you are violating the rules as soon as you can no longer drive safely.

Question 3

What consequences can an untreated vision problem have?

AnswerLonger reaction times, poorer depth perception, overlooked traffic signs - dramatically increased risk of accidents.

Eye tests are valid for 2 years. Anyone who wears glasses must note the entry on their driver's license.

Connection to practice.

This is how the theme shows up 1 in your driving lesson

During every driving lesson, your driving instructor indirectly asks you about your personal condition: Did you sleep well? Are you nervous? Do you need a break? Anyone who understands in theory that driving ability is more than just a test topic will drive more consciously. At the beginning of the practical test you will be asked whether you feel fit to drive - an honest answer is mandatory.
